Curriculum Outline for Fall Semester 2008 

Introduction to Art: Exploring Identity

Project 1: Expression (1 week)
Title: Vision Boards
Essential Question and Content Focus
●	Subject: What do I want in life?
●	Content: Overlapping, composition, mixed media  
Materials: Canvas Board, magazines and other collage, glue, glossy medium
Resources: http://www.christinekane.com/blog/how-to-make-a-vision-board/ 
Project Outline:
●	Choose your type of vision board
○	The “I Know Exactly What I Want” Vision Board
○	The “Opening and Allowing” Vision Board
○	The “Theme” Vision Board
●	Use magazines to cut out images and words that represent you and the type of vision board you want
●	Begin to think about composition and how you want to lay everything out on your canvas board
●	Create your vision board
Display: *see Project 2

Project 2: I AM an Artist! (2 weeks)
Title: Monochromatic Self-Portraits
Essential Question and Content Focus
●	Subject: What colors and facial expressions can I use to represent who I am without using words?
●	Content: Monochromatic and achromatic color schemes, using acrylic paint 
Materials: Digital camera, photo shop, tracing paper, canvas board, acrylic paint, brushes
Project Outline:
●	Discuss symbolic use of color
●	Take digital pictures of all students using black and white on Photo Booth
●	Save and open image in Photo Shop
○	Alter and “Save As- shiggins.altered.jpg”
○	Print Image in Black and White
●	Trace Image and transfer to canvas board
●	Choose “symbolic color” for portrait
●	Paint using Monochromatic Color Scheme
Display: Use opposite side of Vision Board for Monochromatic Painting. Display in 3D formation using shelving hooks so that both sides of image are visible.

Project 3: Introduction to Color (2weeks)
Title: Linoleum Print Project “Warm and Cool Landscapes”
Essential Question and Content Focus: 
●	Subject: What landscape did you choose as your “ideal place” and why? 
●	Content: COLOR WHEEL, warm, cool and complementary color schemes, line, texture, layering, contrast, positive and negative space, foreground and background
Materials: Printer paper, EZ-cut linoleum, cutting tools, printing ink, brayers, colored paper, printing paper
Project Outline: 
Choose a landscape of a place that you have been and loved or a place that you would like to                  go. This should be your ideal space. Do a sketch in your journal.
	With tracing paper, focus on the background of your image. Trace and transfer it to soft cut linoleum block
	Carve lines and cut out negative space
    Print with warm or cool colors
	Trace foreground of landscape 
	Carve and print with opposite color scheme/ or contrasting color
Display: Choose best print to frame and display in conference room. Use black mat board for display

Project 4: Drawing (1.5weeks)
Drawing Workshop: Learning to “See” by drawing what you see
Essential Question and Content Focus:
●	What are some techniques we can use to train ourselves to see like and artist?
●	Line, texture, contour line, gesture drawing, value, shading
Resources: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Betty Edwards
Introductory information/ exercises:
Part 1: Shifting from Left to Right Brain
      Day 1
	Vases and Faces Drawing #1. 
o	Read page 46-48, then students will do Vase/ Face Drawing #1 (use construction paper in journal)
o	Read page 49-50, then students will do Baroque Vase and Monster Face Drawing #2
Day 2
	Do a drawing of a model then (2, 15min poses)…
	Upside-down drawing
	Put examples of both drawings up on the board and compare the two: talk about attention to detail, lines, wrinkles, etc…
Part 2: Line
      Day 3
	Blind Contour (hand) *Collect brown paper bags for this exercise.
	Contour (hand)
	Gesture (full body, models from class)
	Drawing from models: 20min. poses x2
Day 4 
	Contour line drawings of candy and lollipops
Day 5-8
	Drawing Rotations (2 per day)
o	Contour Drawings -flowers
o	Observational Watercolors- flowers
o	Observational Pencil Drawings- shoes
o	Observational Charcoal Drawings- 3D objects
o	Observational Oil Pastels- learning from the Master's portraits
o	Observational Pencil Drawings- outside
Display: Choose most successful drawing for display in classroom

Project 5: Color (3 weeks)
Title: Inspirational People “Mixed Media Project”
Essential Questions and Content Focus: 
●	Who is inspirational to me and why? How can I use colors, composition, and mixed media to represent that person?
●	Value (tint, tone and shade), color schemes and color wheel review, mixed media, composition
Resources: Andy Warhol, Image Entertainment
Project Outline:
	Choose someone who inspires you, find image and research
	Do writing prompt
	Do Monochromatic Mini Painting Lesson *while tracing images from projector
	Show examples of Andy Warhol’s work and discuss pop art and multimedia artwork
	Watch Warhol video *skip chapter 7 and 8
	Alter student images on Photo Shop
o	Crop image
o	Mode-change to gray scale
o	Image- adjust- auto contrast
o	Filter-artistic-cutout (do cutout at about 8 values)
	Print out altered images and glue in to journals
	Trace images from projector screen
	Choose color/black and white
	Paint lightest shade first then continue painting each shade until face is complete
	Background should be a contrasting color or use mixed media supplies to finish image. Mixed media supplies should represent your inspirational person in some way.
Display: Work to be dispersed in core classes

Project 6: Art History (4 weeks)
Title: Learning from our Master's- An Integrated Project with Humanities
Essential Question and Content Focus: 
●	 What is the significance of your artist in the history of art ?
●	Basic knowledge of time period and an in depth knowledge of your artist
Resources: Notes from peers, see Digital Portfolio for additional resources
Project Description:
●	Choose and artist from the list provided
●	Research your artist
●	 Do a Power Point Presentation about your artist to your peers
●	Take notes on peers presentations with a focus on KEY topics
●	Choose a painting and focus on the entire piece or a small section of the work
●	Paint image
●	Take art history test
Display: Outside 10 grade area
●	
Project 7: Final Project (2.5 weeks)
Title: The Cost of Cool- An Integrated Project with Humanities and Math/Physics
Essential Question and Content Focus: 
●	What is the cost of your “cool”?
●	Art and media
Resources: See Digital Portfolio
Project Outline:
	Use background information from your core classes to create a visual time line of an “cool” item
	Create a series of work using the skills that you have acquired this semester in art
